Burgh Babes Abroad - part 2
Sunday 13th January
Helensburgh Athletics Club in America.
In America, Gail Thomas
completed the Florida Walt Disney Marathon in a PB of 5:01:33.
Starting at 6am in the dark the conditions were hot and humid - it felt like running in a steam room. Mickey Mouse and his friends started the race after a firework countdown at Epcot.
The course then took the runners around and through the Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom and MGM Studios before finishing again at Epcot. All was going well till 22 miles when a blister and the heat took their toll. The last 4 miles became literally a walk in the park and a slow one at that!
Being cheered on by vast crowds and many of the Disney Characters was a memorable experience. With the line in sight, knowing that getting in under 5 hours was now out the window it was an opportunity to high five Pluto just before the finish - at what other marathon can you do that?
The huge Mickey Mouse medal made the day complete.
It is definitely a marathon to be recommended.
Gail is already thinking about going back in a few years to do this one again (maybe even the Goofy challenge of the half marathon & full marathon!!)
