Success for Helensburgh ladies

Scottish Athletics awards

Helensburgh Athletics Club celebrated double success in Scotland and abroad at the weekend. Michelle Hetherington and Julia Henderson were selected to run for the Scottish Veterans in the British and Irish Masters Cross Country at Stormont Castle in Belfast on Saturday. Both finished well up the field; Julia, running for the V35 team, picked up a bronze medal and Michelle missed out on a team medal but finished in a fantastic 6th position overall for her V40 category.

Both rushed back from Belfast to get to the Scottish Athletics Annual Awards dinner where Michelle picked up 1st female Masters prize, Julia won 5th senior lady and the ladies team including Michelle, Julia, Mary Louise Mac Quarrie and Jennifer Fitzgerald won 2nd ladies team in the Navy Blue Road Race Series 2007. This national series involved athletes competing in races across Scotland to earn points determined by their best finishing position in six of the ten races from 5k to marathon. This is a wonderful achievement for a relatively small and very local club such as HAAC and the Club are very proud of their success at a national level.

The club is hosting the Dunbartonshire Amateur Athletic Association cross country this Saturday with races for under 11s to super veterans and beyond.

The club welcomes new members both experienced and not so experienced runners and joggers. Please watch for details of our annual beginners programme which will commence in Spring 2008.
